Online Science Degrees
The growing popularity of online degree programs has benefited most subject areas but there are a few that have lagged behind. One of those would be the world of science. There are very few online science degrees available and that looks unlikely to change anytime soon. Science degrees are difficult to teach online and they aren't particularly popular so there aren't many of them out there. However if you look hard enough you will be able to find a few.
In general your options when it comes to online science degrees are going to be limited. This is especially true if you are interested in one of the hard sciences like physics or chemistry. If you look hard enough you may be able to find an online degree in one of these fields but they are few and far between. The main reason for this is the necessity for laboratory work. While it has been possible to teach most things online, hands on lab work is one thing that nobody has quite figured out how you would do online. If you do manage to find an online science course in one of the hard sciences you can be sure that you will have to actually attend courses on campus in order to complete the lab work so it won't be fully online.
The science degrees that you do find online tend to be more of the interdisciplinary sciences or the social sciences. In general these are subjects that requires scientific knowledge but aren't really what you would think of as a science in itself. This would include subjects like environmental science or fire science. It would also include the social sciences like anthropology or geography. Generally these courses don't require lab work since they aren't really sciences they are science related subjects. They are however much easier to teach online and therefore much more widely available.
Part of the reason that there are so few online science degrees is that they are not all that popular. That tends to make it unlikely that they will become more widely available in the future. Online degrees tend to appeal mainly to people who are looking to advance their career; in general an online science degree won't do that. If you want to be an actual scientist you are pretty much going to have to take an on campus course.
The reason that you are going to have to take an on campus degree if you want to be a scientist, besides the difficulty of teaching lab work online, is that most scientist jobs are in the world of academia. While online degrees have caught on in most career fields the one place where they are still looked down on would be in the world of academia. You will find it nearly impossible to get an academic appointment with an online science degree. That tends to reduce the demand for them.
